At the moment I have it as a geojson but obviously geojson specifies an actual location on earth and therefore size. So what I want is an abstract shape in a stored format that I can tell folium to "place" on the map where I want it which could be anywhere on earth!
Therefore, what's the easiest and simplest way to do this? Some other format of shape data I am guessing? Thanks to a suggestion through Ruslan S. I tried using the folium. CustomIcon function and this worked:. Learn more. Best way to add a custom polygon to a folium map in any location? Ask Question. Asked 3 days ago. Active 2 days ago. Viewed 21 times. I have one slightly abstract question however as to the best way to do something: I have my own polygon marker shapes example below in geojson is a cocktail glass with the letter J for Jameson on it!
Apr 12 at That's an idea but I really need this to be done before plotting happens so it needs to be some sort of shape data. How about a custom icon using folium. Good suggestion, this worked! I will address that before the v0. PBrockmann this is fixed in master. I will push for a new release ASAP. I have just mentionned folium in a promissing project on WMS. It should be "parameters" option. I saw that. We need to sort out too. I will open another issue for that. Done in Yep: To inline everything breaks more stuff than fixes it. The proper fix is in folium v0. Sorry, but if you can figure out a better way to fix this we can always release a v0. Although I strongly recommend you to take a look at the unreleased v0.

There's a category called "Congressional Districts: th Congress", and farther down the page, under "State-based Files", you can get shapefiles for the upper and lower houses of your state. You can also likely download them from at www2. Before I found the TIGER district data, I took a more roundabout path that involved learning how to merge shapes; more on that in a separate post.
But it has an equally important function: even if your input shapefile is already in WGS84, adding that option somehow ensures that GDAL will use degrees as the output unit. Don't ask me about details of all these different geodetic reference systems; I'm still trying to figure it all out. In practice, you'll probably want to more, like color different regions differently show some sort of highlight when the user chooses a region show which region is which Each of these requires some extra work.
You can color the regions with a style function: folium. You can do it by reading the GeoJSON yourself, splitting it into separate polygons and making them all separate Folium Polygons or GeoJSON objects, each with its own click behavior; but if you don't mind highlights and popups on mouseover instead of requiring a click, that's pretty easy. Generally you'll want to look inside "features", for "properties" to find the fields defined for each polygon. If you still aren't sure which property name means what for example, "NAME" could be anythingjust keep browsing through the JSON file to see which fields change from feature to feature and give the values you're looking for, and it should become obvious pretty quickly.
